This design largely
responds to the functional requirements of the
client – the creation of a formalised ‘public’
meeting space (Office / Study) and provision
of adequate storage – whilst maintaining the
integrity of the original timber cottage.
We had been previously
been involved with the client, working on the
design and construction of the ground level
additions and alterations to the rear of the
same cottage.

The available
space within which to accommodate the functional
requirements was problematic. The construction
of the Attic within the existing roof space
and the establishment of a strong visual and
spatial link with the Office / Study below (with
access via the spiral staircase) resolved the
brief.
The Attic is
provided with natural daylight and ventilation
from domed dormer windows (front and rear).
The dormer windows are a feature that is consistent
with the language of the traditional timber
cottage.

Externally the
appearance reflects the symmetry, scale and
proportion typical to buildings in the area
of similar era and construction.
Internally, however,
the appearance is contemporary. The raked and
curved ceilings maximise the spaces, and the
spiral staircase provides a dynamic element
in a non-traditional material.
| Internal connection
between Attic space and Office / Study below
– defined boundaries between ‘new’ and ‘old’:

|
The ‘old’ is
juxtaposed against the ‘new’ and a dialogue
emerges – the new materials and construction
serve as counter-point to the old – an appreciation
of each is the result. A harmonious balance
is achieved.
