Principles Behind the Song of the Yearly Cycle

The ‘Song of the Big Yearly Cycle’ is a memory tool used by people in the past to quickly construct a Bazhai diagram. The real mechanism behind the permutations is of changing yao in the Bagua (Bian Gua).

The Bagua are made up of three yao, representing different combinations of yin and yang forces.

A broken line (- -) signifies yin energy, and a solid line (---) indicates yang energy.

Changing a yao of the original Gua simply means changing a yin yao into yang, or the yang yao into yin. Thus creating a new Gua. When constructing a Bazhai Diagram the original Gua would be either the Zhai Gua of the house or the Ming Gua of the person.

The pattern of changing yao to construct the Bazhai Diagrams is as follows:

Changes Made to Original Gua                    Bazhai ‘Star’ Derived

1) Change Upper Yao                         >         Sheng Qi (Wood)

2) Change Middle Yao                       >         Jue Ming (Metal)

3) Change First Yao                            >         Huo Hai (Earth)

4) Change Middle and Upper Yao             Wu Gui (Fire)

5) Change First and Upper Yao          >         Liu Sha (Water)

6) Change First and Middle Yao         >         Tian Yi (Earth)

7) Change all three Yao                     >         Yun Nian (Metal)

8) The three Yao don’t change           >         Fu Wei (Wood)

The particular yin/yang changes of the three yao of the original Gua determine the auspiciousness and inauspiciousness of each of the eight stars in the Bazhai Diagram.
